Aside from the cheapo badge/figure base I grabbed on the way out the door, I'm practically cosplaying ToS Trek without having to do anything special. I did make sure to wear a blue shirt rather than red (I don't own a solid-color yellow or gold shirt, but I'm more science section anyway), I'm already wearing black pants and shoes this time of year. I have a flip-open communicator at one hip, and have a portable computer in my pocket (and if I wanted the look of the Tricorder man-purse I could always bring one of my EEE's along).

ETA: Drat. The online schedule's been changed, now it says there's no showings before 4:10 PM today, even though they had 1PM showings of movies on Mondays. Turns out corporate decided to go back on school-year schedule again until the end of the month, despite today being the perfect day to get college business (last day of regular classes).

Couldn't resist the pun. Sonic/Sonic Defender set to the minimum possible height and build.
On Pinnacle, if anyone cares )

I agree with people who posted in my previous thread that the Kindle has a number of issues (heck, my QuickLink to Plastic.com about this was titled, "Um, the DRM ate my homework?"). But I don't personally expect to use any flavor of Kindle unless I get a grant to test them out or somesuch.

Rather, I see this as being to textbooks what the iPod has been to music. If Amazon learns the right lessons, they can still be a major force in the field, but the important thing is that by proving the concept they'll lead to competitors that will be analogous to the River or Sansa. Once schools get used to the idea of a unified eText delivery system (and I expect several will be roped into multi-year exclusive contracts, but even those will go away eventually), alternatives will appear, DRMing will abate, and once again the guy in XKCD will need to find something else to complain about. ;)

Super-Kindle to be tested at CWRU, aimed at replacing textbooks. We may actually get to the "eTexts outnumber hardcopy" goal by 2012 like that one textbook publisher predicted a few years ago at an AAPT meeting.

Files tend to corrupt... )
ETA: Thanks to embracing the inherent corruption of AE farming, I got him to L24 in a couple of hours. :) And then I did the cape mission and got a little closer to the kind of cape I want:
Still not a one-connection cape, but better. )

Back when I was trying to reimagine my Legion of Net.Heroes characters through a Nobilis framework, I decided that Nigella damascena fit the bill as a symbol of corruption, a signature flower for Acton Lord. Now that I have a real N.damascena, it seems to be supporting my choice.... (FWIW, this is by far the most successful of my windowsill plants, ever.)
I've discovered that "painting" over cured Apoxie Clay with Plastruct's plastic weld will give the surface a glossy sheen. It remains to be seen whether this makes it harder to paint.

dvandom.dreamwidth.org exists and is in the process of importing entries. It obligingly imported my friends list, but since I can't actually see anything by them until they set me to "allowed" it's not that much of a time-saver. So, this joins my Wordpress and Blogspot accounts as "grabbing the ID just in case, but not actually using it" list for now.

Nothing of note, lots of older stuff; Other Media: Ms. Marvel action figures )

Two pieces of mail from Bank of America today.

Envelope 1. Notice that the fees for things like cash advances (including cash advance checks) are increasing to 4% of transaction with a minimum of $10, and foreign transaction fees are increasing to 3% (I accidentally used my BoA card to pay for my room in Canada, fortunately got reimbursed for the transaction fee by the school).

Envelope 2. A pile of cash advance checks promising a low APR on cash advances.

Implication: QUICK! Use all these cash advance checks before they cost $10 each to use!
Way back in high school, in 1987 or 1988, I was introduced to the equation for angular magnification (as by a magnifying glass), that being mθ = 25cm/f (where 25cm is the standard "near point" and f is the focal length of the lens). The explanation was kinda handwaved, and I didn't really get it, but I didn't need to get it in order to use the equation.

Yesterday, I finally ran into a homework question that required understanding the derivation, and I had to figure it out during class (the textbook being almost no help at all) so I could explain it to my students, oops. Turns out there's two very important assumptions that tend to get hidden or glossed over: you don't leave the object in the same place (i.e. you look at it as close as you can without the lens, then put the lens in place and MOVE THE OBJECT until you get a clear image), and the lens has to be right up in your eye so that the angular size of the object and the image are the same. Even our multiple-teaching-award-winning distinguished professor who's helping teach this class got tripped up on the second assumption.

AKA Optimouse Prime. Not really worth getting unless you simply must have a Mickey Mouse robot that turns into a chibi version of G1 Optimus Prime's vehicle mode.
