Back when I was trying to reimagine my Legion of Net.Heroes characters through a Nobilis framework, I decided that Nigella damascena fit the bill as a symbol of corruption, a signature flower for Acton Lord. Now that I have a real N.damascena, it seems to be supporting my choice.... (FWIW, this is by far the most successful of my windowsill plants, ever.)
I've discovered that "painting" over cured Apoxie Clay with Plastruct's plastic weld will give the surface a glossy sheen. It remains to be seen whether this makes it harder to paint.

dvandom.dreamwidth.org exists and is in the process of importing entries. It obligingly imported my friends list, but since I can't actually see anything by them until they set me to "allowed" it's not that much of a time-saver. So, this joins my Wordpress and Blogspot accounts as "grabbing the ID just in case, but not actually using it" list for now.

Two pieces of mail from Bank of America today.

Envelope 1. Notice that the fees for things like cash advances (including cash advance checks) are increasing to 4% of transaction with a minimum of $10, and foreign transaction fees are increasing to 3% (I accidentally used my BoA card to pay for my room in Canada, fortunately got reimbursed for the transaction fee by the school).

Envelope 2. A pile of cash advance checks promising a low APR on cash advances.

Implication: QUICK! Use all these cash advance checks before they cost $10 each to use!
Way back in high school, in 1987 or 1988, I was introduced to the equation for angular magnification (as by a magnifying glass), that being mθ = 25cm/f (where 25cm is the standard "near point" and f is the focal length of the lens). The explanation was kinda handwaved, and I didn't really get it, but I didn't need to get it in order to use the equation.

Yesterday, I finally ran into a homework question that required understanding the derivation, and I had to figure it out during class (the textbook being almost no help at all) so I could explain it to my students, oops. Turns out there's two very important assumptions that tend to get hidden or glossed over: you don't leave the object in the same place (i.e. you look at it as close as you can without the lens, then put the lens in place and MOVE THE OBJECT until you get a clear image), and the lens has to be right up in your eye so that the angular size of the object and the image are the same. Even our multiple-teaching-award-winning distinguished professor who's helping teach this class got tripped up on the second assumption.

AKA Optimouse Prime. Not really worth getting unless you simply must have a Mickey Mouse robot that turns into a chibi version of G1 Optimus Prime's vehicle mode.

2.3M PDF of my PhD Thesis. Antithesis not available at this time. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] scavgraphics for the widget that let me splice the chapters together more smoothly.

Well, I've unpacked my new refurb EEE PC 900 XP (ETA: Dunno why I initially thought it was 801) and done some basic setup. Not sure it's gonna displace my 700, even with the bigger memory and larger screen. Oh, and I named it MOGUERA, since the Heisei version was a refurbed set of MechaGodzilla remains last I heard.

The human histamine response system is a clear case of favoring type I error (false positives) over type II error (false negatives). Evolutionally speaking, it's better to feel miserable for a month in the spring and a month in the fall than to die of a respiratory infection, but it still sucks to be at the high end of the survivable part of the combined curve this time of year.

Discussion time. :) For each of the major (i.e. more than a couple of stories) ASH Authors, which single issue or short arc would you recommend to new readers as a way to get acquainted with our work? Preferably something that wouldn't require a lot of background to understand (i.e. not "continuity porn").

Obviously, I'm not the best person to judge this, since I'm way too close to the issue. This isn't an awards sort of thing, more of a call for comments.

The authors in question are: Dave Van Domelen, Tony Pi, Marc Singer, Matt Rossi III and Andrew Burton. Please suggest one issue or short arc for each writer.
