Well, I've unpacked my new refurb EEE PC 900 XP (ETA: Dunno why I initially thought it was 801) and done some basic setup. Not sure it's gonna displace my 700, even with the bigger memory and larger screen. Oh, and I named it MOGUERA, since the Heisei version was a refurbed set of MechaGodzilla remains last I heard.
And no, it's not the OS (although I hear there's a way to switch the GUI to a version like the 700's, and would prefer that). The keyboard feels a little more cramped, it doesn't seem to be able to use the AC adapters I already have for the 700 (so if I want a spare, I have to buy yet another one), and it runs a lot hotter than the 700. Also, the surface is slicker, which makes it just a little bit harder to hold.
I had to install Firefox and PuTTY (since I can't find an SSH client native to XP, even though one probably exists). Right now I've got it set to do nothing when I close the lid, but I'd like to make it shut off the monitor but NOT sleep, like I have my 700 modded to do. There might be a solution for that on the EEE forums, though, and for now setting a short monitor-off time when on battery power will do.
I grabbed a clearanced carrybag at Target today (they've removed their EEE endcap and clearanced out the accessories), it's too small to carry more than the laptop itself without bulging, which is why I never bought one at full price (my DigiLegend is a lot better), but whichever EEE becomes my backup machine can use it. (ETA: the 900 is a few millimeters larger in its two short dimensions than the 700, so it barely fits in the bag. The 700 and its charger fit fine, although it's bulgy.)
On the plus side, it's a lot easier to install software if I think I can spare the room (anything not on the ASUS package site requires me to know a lot more Linux than I do in order to install), and the 8GB size means I can hold off dedicating an SD card to it like I have on Kiryu (the 700).
In the end, I expect that one will default to living at my apartment and one at the office (so I can use it when the Vista network goes foom, plus taking notes at the occasional talk), but it may be a while before I decide. And MOGUERA will come along to conferences, since it'll be easier to get support for things like locked-down wireless networks of the sort that gave me so much hassle in Edmonton.
Might wanna look into adding some grip tape to it, though. :)
ETA: Looking at some entries on the EEEUser.com forum suggests I shouldn't even bother learning to use the Microsoft Works that comes with the 900, and just install OpenOffice.
ETA: Ordered a travel charger for the 900, it's nice and small.
