I've just always wondered what an egg-laying species would do for child care in the early stages, socially speaking. Humans drop them off at day cares or the like. Wolves find a female who can lactate but may not be going on the hunt and she will collect all the pups to get them out of the way. But those are all live-bearers. Do egg-layers put them in an incubator before going to work, or what?
As I wrote it, Karen basically got to sit on the egg most of the time while Knuckles did all the foot work. She could use a heating blanket if she needed to get up briefly, otherwise Knuckles could sit on it if needed(natural body heat vs artifical electric heat).
Though perhaps the big advantage was that, as I depicted this "hidden" echidna society(formed some time back by surviving refugess of Knuckles' tribe after the Chaos incident, isolated from the outside world until recent), they are largely a money-free society. Work for the community but never worry about needing things with room to allow for special conditions. Therefore, Karen didn't need to worry about such duties while guarding her eggs.
I guess they could have used incubators and such, but Sega depicts the echidnas as mostly stubborn. Incubators are the lazy way out.
Sounds like the 'ideal' of communism (not the Soviet stuff, please don't misunderstand me) where children were considered of such importance that parents were looked after by everyone on some level to make sure they were viable (every adult being a parent to every child as Marx put it, I think...could be wrong).
I could see that working for echidnas, by their nature they are much more basic than most mammals, closer to reptiles, so their perception of 'wants and needs' are probably different too...
You've got me interested, and I know nothing about this series at all!
They're more comparable to American Indians in their version of communism. Though they still allow personal ownership. They have technology(this offshoot group holds the idea that the old ways of the tribe were bad, due to the fact it almost got them all killed). Despite their decision to open up to the outside world, however, their only routine trade is between the fruit company owned by Rouge and her husband- they get apples, strawberries and such and export oranges, bananas and more tropical stuff. Fruit for fruit.
I'll have you start here for reference as my stuff deals with "console canon". http://diosoth.net46.net/canon/soniccanon.html
While most people want to see ALL the games as a single series, there are far too many contradictions and retcons if they are. But if you divide them into 2 separate timelines, remove "non canon" games, etc, a lot of the inconsistencies become consistent.
That page isn't even REMOTELY finished, but the console canon section is done.
And until Sega says otherwise, Chronicles is considered a non-canon side story.
Then I'll have you go here- http://www.fanfiction.net/~diosoth
Tagged "M" per FF.net's strict content guidelines but these are the "censored" copies of the stories without the more mature-but-not-plot-relevant scenes. You MIGHT still need an account to view them though due to the rating tag, I don't know.
