Anyone have opinions of or experience with Domain Registry of America, or any other "we'll transfer your registry" services? My current registrar for dvandom.com is really cheap ($10/year), but unfortunately when they got bought up there was a weird technical issue that prevents me from logging in and doing anything...I can still pay my bills and do a few things by email (like getting IP numbers re-aimed), but it worries me occasionally. DRoA wants $30/year ($50/2 years), and I'd hopefully get a much better interface situation (i.e. one that I can log into!), but I never heard of DRoA before getting snailmail from them today.

Update: DRoA sucks, got it. Grabbed dvandom.info for 99 cents from GoDaddy for now, will wait to do transfer tricks on dvandom.com a little closer to the expiry date for the domain (which is significantly later than what DRoA said, the jerks). But the .info will at least let me have an alternate path if something flubs temporarily on the handoff. (And I don't think I can just transfer now, since I can't log into the cheapdomainnames.com control panel to authorize it, but I'll poke at the idea more when the deadline is closer (and I'm on full pay...summer months are a bit leaner).

Avoid.

I first encountered them by a piece of snailmail designed to appear as official Federal government stationery. The message was designed to convey the impression that the domain name in question would expire soon unless I re-registered it with them. I found this highly deceptive marketing, to say the least.

There are many other registry services, and every last one of them is cheaper. DRoA is aiming to make its money off of the ignorant- nothing more.

Gotcha, dropping the letter in File 13.

Anyone got a transfer-to registry they'd recommend? Mainly I don't want to worry about losing uptime to the switchover. Doesn't have to be fancy, just needs to work.

I have no worries with GoDaddy (although their website encourages you to buy extras).

GoDaddy certainly will never let your domain expire without you knowing about it, that's for damn sure.

fourthed on godaddy. their website is a pain in the ass to navigate if you're not paying attention as they try to add on tons of crap, but their service is top notch and cheap.
