[1988 - Chicago, IL]

"That was a lovely speech," June Blair said to her husband, as he stepped back into the commencement hall. Fifteen minutes after disappearing into the crowd or graduates, family members, and teachers, Wilson Blair finally surfaced. He was still wearing his doctoral robe, but held the hat tucked under his arm.

"Yes, and I have my lovely practice audience to thank for it," Wilson replied. He gave his wife a quick peck on the cheek, smiling at her. "So are you...uh, two...where's...?"

Before he could say her name, Jennifer Blair rushed up behind her father. "Daddy, Daddy, Daddy!" she cheered. She grabbed Wilson around the neck, hugging him tightly. Only when his eyes started to bulge and June let out a polite-yet-firm cough did Jennifer release her father. "Can you make me one of those things you mentioned?"

Wilson looked from Jennifer to her mother. June shook her head, not knowing. Wilson tried to guess which "thing" she was referring to, as his recalled a good many nouns from his speech. "Which thing, Jenny?"

With a tone and inflection that reflected several minutes of repetition, Jennifer said, "A seamless diamond sphere filled with creamy meringue." She beamed a wide grin at Wilson. "If you could make one about, this big," she held her fingers half an inch apart, "and mount it on a chain, Margeaux Hampton would just die when I showed it too her."
