Nah, he wasn't alive in the film. But for the later toys, they've taken vehicles that appeared in the movie and made 'em into TFs regardless of whether they actually came alive. There's a transforming SWAT truck coming up, and some people (like thandrak) have the one that turns into a Sector 7 striker vehicle thing. Longarm is modeled after the tow truck in the movie, is all.
Well, that's a cheat and a half. I was wondering why the only things that the Allspark spawned were like rikti monkeys: evil, brutish, nasty and vicious.
If Longarm had been one of the spawned things, I would have been much happier for it.
Actually, the Sector 7 thing... I've lost his name, he was the Energon wrecker half-track... is listed in his bio as being something brought online by the Allspark wave.
The semi-canonical background I've heard is that the AllSpark only gives life, there's an additional ingredient needed to make it intelligent, non-feral life.
