This is stuff I entered on my PDA, much like I've been blogging my AAPT meetings lately.
9:00 AM
Woke about 8 as the super was making noise clearing fallen branches from the drive paths. Eventually gave up on sleep when it was clear I had lost power overnight.
According to the new on my battery powered TV radio (I have a little TV that can in theory run on batteries, but ten AAs is a tad unreasonable), an inch of ice hit us here.
No one answered the phone at work, so I guess the university is closed.
Had a light breakfast of granola bars and fruit leather, if the power's still out by noon I'll take the spoilable out to the car and eat proper. Of course, if the power IS on, I'll still eat, just won't need to use my car as a fridge.
Westar's report line says 3-6 hours until power comes back. Gonna hold off on showering until I have power.
Took some pics of the ice. Fortunately they don't also have to act as insurance photos...no tree limbs hit my car.
New report in, twelve thousand households without power in Riley County, up from seven thousand when I went to bed. The flickers I got every so often last night were from other people getting knocked off the grid.
Oh joy...freezing rain has now been replaced by sleet. Supposed to get one to three inches of snow on top of this too.
9:20 AM
News says Riley was still at seven thou without power at six, so there's a fair chance I was waken in part by the silence as my radio went dead.
10:45 AM
Managed to doze off, which is good...more sleep equals putting off the need for a proper meal. Guys are outside taking advantage of the lull in precip to scrape the parking lot. Looks like the tarp I put on the rear window of my car is kinda crumpled. Hopefully it did SOME good, though.
Power still not on, needless to say.
11:30 AM
Had lunch, took the spoilables out to the car. Unfortunately, the tarp over the front window slid down early on, so the windshield is covered in ice. I'll probably have to go out and scrape soon, while it's still only about freezing, rather than let it freeze hard.
At least I can wear my slush stomper shoes over my new knit socks, so my feet didn't get cold while I was out.
Noon
Up to fifteen thousand households without power, according to the news, with expectations of it getting worse.
2:30 PM
Still no power. Went out to scrape the ice off my car and reposition the front tarp to the driver's side, where at least it might stay put. Why scrape ice if I'm not going out on account of there being no place with power to go to?
1) It needs doing, and will be easier before the temps drop and we get snow.
2) I had to go do SOMETHING more physical than lie in bed, or I'd go nuts!
3) Frankly, smashing away at ice is kinda fun when it's not standing between you and getting somewhere on time.
The tree branches that are still attached to the trees have these weirdly curving icicles, since their angle of hang changed as the trees got progressively more weighed down. They look like trees full of icy fangs, waiting to come spearing down on hapless prey...and given that there were more branches on the ground than at noon, that is precisely what they've been doing....
3:00 PM
Belatedly remembered to eat the one serving of ice cream I had left. It was pretty much ice cream soup...holding its shape mainly because of the chunky inclusions of peanut butter and chocolate. Good thing I'd forgotten to get more on Sunday, or it'd have all gone off. Long gone are the days when I could polish off a quart of thawing ice cream without serious consequences.
The "three to six hours" estimated this morning are over, still no power. Sigh.
4:00 PM
Argh. Estimate now at one to two DAYS without power! Getting too dark to read by cloudy daylight too. I may have to drive to Topeka and get a hotel room or something at this rate.
Oh, and the tarp I moved to cover the side of my car blew up onto the top, whee.
I may risk the roads and go to campus, if only to try recharging things (as the network is likely to stay down until they're sure power is back for good there), as my answering machine at work seems to be working. Although it may have a battery backup, I forget. Maybe I should call the outage line and enter my work number.
6:00 PM
At work. Campus only had a blip that turned off computers and stuff, the network was even up. So I'm online and eating a hot meal from my leftover lunchfood, while recharging stuff. Gonna hang out here at least another two hours so I can check blood sugar before I go. May hit Dillon's grocery on the way home, a coworker will call and let me know if they still have power.
Oh, and looks like people with finals today won't have to wait until January, but any with nonrefundable airplane tickets are out of luck, as finals are rescheduled for Friday night and Saturday (with the residence halls staying open an extra day).
7:00 PM
Just realized I don't need to bother with Target on the way home (although it IS open), I can just "borrow" some AA batteries from the lab supply room before leaving.
10:30 PM
Home safe. It's 56 degrees F in here according to the thermostat, I should be okay. Transferred ice and icepacks to the fridge to help keep things cool, but might have to pitch some borderline "not spoilable enough to take to the car but iffy" things like sealed cheeses.
On the plus side, it looks like the power's back on everywhere but a slice from Anderson to Kimball between Seth Child and Wreath...power's on across the street from me. Hopefully that means I'll be waken up at some point by my bedside lamp coming on. Gonna read a little on my PDA before sleeping, since I know I can recharge it at work.
Took some flash photos of the icefangs. Annoyingly, my camera doesn't warn of low battery until there's only a couple flashes left, so I only got three pics. Hopefully one is in focus.
12/12 8:45 AM
So much for that hope. Still estimated at one to two days, they're concentrating on the Southeast side of town now. Probably in part, ironically, because so much of the general area around me has power. Grrrr.
9:20 AM
The good news is, the hot water heater's insulation is good enough there was actual hot water, enough for a very quick shower. The bad news is, once I shut off the shower and the ambient 53F kicked back in, I had a lovely shivering fit. Shan't be trying that again if still without power tomorrow.
11:30 AM
Okay, the plan for today is to call the comic shop once they open and see if they're gonna have comics, then work from there for mid-afternoon. If no comics, maybe hit Wal-Mart for some groceries. Dinner will be eaten out, regardless...even if power is restored in time, I'm not in the cooking mood.
If power is back on after dinner, I try to get things working and then review comics if I have 'em. Otherwise, grab munchies and head back to the office.
5:00 PM
Comics delayed, but in. Got what I needed at Wal-Mart. Dunno about power at home yet, but not holding my breath.
6:20 PM
Well, the lights were out when I got home, so I just pulled up in front too check for mail. As I got out of the car the lights went on! So I pulled into the lot, gathered my food and started to head in. I paused to chat with a neighbor...and the power went back out. D'oh! Turns out I haven't gotten mail anyway...so much for "neither rain nor sleet nor etc."
Dinner out as initially planned, now back to the office to read and review comics. And maybe the power will come on for real.
(Speculation: power was restored at a root point, but after a minute or so a marginal local line fratzed. A convoy of Westar trucks passed me heading towards the area as I approached dinner.)
10:45 AM
Left the PDA in my office, sigh. Power was still not on.
This morning my apartment had gotten down to the forties. Still no mail, and the automated line said a week or more for power.
Fortunately, they're working on my area now. The Super came in to shut off the heater and water heater, apparently the spike in load was too much for them to get power to go on. Once they get power on, which should be soon, he'll come around and turn everything on.
Meanwhile, it's going to be too warm and sunny to use my car as a fridge, but no guarantee of power at home, so the *plan* was to bring my spoilables in and put them in the big fridge in the lounge at work.
Bzzzt. Thesis defense going on, no admittance. So I'll use the spare fridge in room 407, right?
Nope, it was unplugged a while ago for defrosting and then forgotten. So I got to cram everything in the main group fridge.
Anyway, I also had to park under a sagging tree, since all the other faculty spaces within a five minute walk are full in midmorning. So I'll need to go move my car once lunch starts opening spaces up.
Correction...the fridge in 407 was plugged back in last week, so it must be broken.
6:00 PM
Still no power at home. Would've had to come back to the office anyway tonight, I left my phone and PDA here. :/ Brought back dinner fixin's, shampoo and a towel (to use at a sink), plus the mail that finally got delivered.
If the power comes on too late for the super to turn on the furnace, I'll just use the electric oven.
6:40 PM
The tap water doesn't really get hot in the lab classrooms, but I'll settle for the "not painfully cold" I managed to coax out of the one in the Engineering Physics studio. I feel somewhat better with clean hair and face, at least.
Oh, and lesson learned: do not put the cheese in the microwave with the hot dog for the entire minute. Nuke the dog for 50 seconds and THEN add the slice of cheese for the last ten seconds. :)
11:37 PM
I CAN HAS POWAH!
Edit: Pictures!
