On October 13th 2006, I was diagnosed with diabetes. Since then, I've lost a lot of weight, gotten my blood sugar under control, and had to replace pretty much my entire wardrobe. :) Still taking some meds, but no more insulin.
I think that's excellent. I've always found it fascinating how some people can go off insulin entirely (my father was never able to) and it's great when possible! I'm glad it's working for you!
I refused to let the doctor give me Actos given the family tradition of heart disease, and he said, "OK, but you need to do an hour more of exercise per day."
Which I haven't been able to manage, quite, but getting there. And when I do, it works as well as taking the Actos.
No particular family history of heart disease on my part, although the men do tend to die long before the women. Grandpa Van Domelen died from type 1 diabetes complications, Grandpa DeSio died of the aftereffects of a stroke. And dad's had some microstrokes...so that's the thing I have to worry about, methinks. Actos, at least, isn't as bad as Avandia, as far as I can tell, although they're in the same chemical family.
If I can't get off Actos entirely within the next year, though, I'll be looking at switching to a different drug. The nurses at the Diabetes Center have brought up a few possibilities (Juvenal, IIRC?).
