The only bad thing that happened on the trip back, other than the planned "get back after 1 AM, having gotten up at the equivalent of 5 AM" thing was that the little legs on my suitcase got broken, probably in the van on the drive back (since they seemed fine in the airport). As it's the middle size of a three-pack of nesting cases I got last year, no huge deal.
