To quote a macro, "I see what you did there," Mr. Crane, but I'm judging from the reaction that it didn't work. If his aim was to create the sense that life from that moment on was going to be a series of moments of suspense and dread, that's respectable, if not adequately executed. So to speak.
It does make the finale of Angel come off much better, though.
I loved the finale of Angel. Just like Buffy, The ending of the show showed the essence of the character. With Buffy, You have a girl who's been carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders for years, and that simple question "Yeah, Buffy, What ARE you going to do now" summed up exactly how free she was from that weight. Because this time, it actually meant, what are you going to do now, instead of "how are we going to deal with this mess?"
With Angel, Joss spent five seasons showing us Angel's dedication to the good fight, from giving up the gem of Amarra, to giving up Buffy when he could have had her, to every other decision he made that might have meant some suffering for him but it made the world a better place. And despite all that, he always came out on top. And I think that last few seconds of Angel showed that.
As someone that doesn't watch the show, but whose roommate does...
First there was confusion "WHAT THE FUCK?! WHAT? HOW?" Then anger set in "THOSE ASSHOLES! WHAT THE HELL KIND OF ENDING WAS THAT?!"
Then I started laughing maniacally because he wouldn't get resolution or anything for these characters that he's been watching for the last 5 or so years...
Innocent? How much has he witnessed and done NOTHING!!! What more, what one thing does all the crime and murder and badness in the show have in common? The Camera man!!!
