The Film Crew extends the RiffTrax effort to making new MST-style movies, with most of the original MST crew. First DVD is due in July, and four eps total are in the can so far, according to Satellite News. Woot.
The Film Crew was something that was originally going to be done through Rhino, but Best Brains had some legal issues with the premise being too close to MST3K, and since Rhino is MST3K's sole distributor, the project was sold to Shout Factory, who've been inexplicably sitting on it for three years.
The Crew have since moved on and tried to distance themselves from the project, so expect that only four movies will be released through The Film Crew.
RiffTrax is the thing that they're pushing now, which is unfortunate because as much as I like the guys, I don't find the RiifTrax bits particularly funny.
I'm looking forward to getting all four of the Film Crew movies as they're released over the next year or two, and I hope Mike goes back to doing commentary tracks on old movies through Legend Films (who I think also owns part of RiffTrax).
To clarify, the Film Crew DVDs were recorded almost three years ago, before RiffTrax. The movies were originally to be released by Rhino, but for legal reasons they couldn't, and so the rights were obtained by Shout! Factory. Not sure why it took them this long to find release dates for them, though.
The Film Crew will no longer be producing DVDs under that name, but instead will be working with Legend Films and RiffTrax. Sorry for any confusion - I hope this helps clear things up.

Not the return of MST3K, sadly; at least not an extended return
