American Association of Physics Teachers/American Astronomical Society Winter 2007 Joint Meeting Travelblogue

Saturday, January 6

(Before leaving) Pretty much a travel day. Forecast looks good for airports, although it's gonna be cold and rainy in Seattle, surprise. I did some checking online, there's a library across from the conference center, so I may be able to get a bit of full access every day. Also gonna be right next to the Space Needle. Subway restaurants are thicker on the ground than Starbucks.

Disquieting "omen" for travel. A Frontier Air jet nearly hit a small plane on the runway in Denver yesterday. I'm flying Frontier with a layover in Denver. Whee.

Weighed in at 223.5 lbs this morning, let's see how badly I go off diet this week!

(On the road) Left campus at noon, right on schedule. Spartak is driving, so I can do the glucose testing while we travel. Took him a bit to get the hang of the automatic transmission and sluggish brakes, but twenty minutes on and he's doing fine.

(At KCI) Arrived plenty early, checked in with minimal hassle by 2:30. Airport now has free wireless, may poke at email after I do my daily walk.

Well, one "lap" of the concourse is about a kilometer, although that doesn't include the sealed-off international arrivals area. 20 minutes of walking briskly in a winter coat while lugging a stuffed backpack is enough exercise for now. :) The dining options here are a bagel place, a Starbucks and two bars...I hope the Denver to Seattle leg has meal service, since the layover won't leave any time for dinner in Denver. Wireless works fine, checked home and work email and poked at LJ for a little, but wireless eats battery, so I didn't linger.

Security line took way too long, and they set the magnetometers to "pissy" so almost everyone got wanded and patted down, including me. Plane way already boarding by the time I got through.

Ooooh, the plane has Direct TV on the seats. But it's five bucks unless you just want to watch the spam channel. Or the Mapquest channel, which is kinda cool. Speed, position on the map and altitude above sea level, updated live.

Landed in Denver late, not quite at the terminal when boarding started for the second leg. "Fortunately," the inbound of our connection was very late, so there was time to grab dinner...no meal on the flight, after all. The first leg didn't even have snacks, just drinks.

REALLY late. More than an hour late. And there's no seats open in the waiting area. As apologies for this, they made the TV free. Boomerang but no CN, so I get to watch tonight's shows on tape later. Or will have by the time I post this, I guess.

Landed in Seattle around 9:30 PST. Spartak's checked luggage took forever to come out. Been traveling for 12 hours, still not done. Gah.

(At hotel) Well, the gym looks okay, room is nice, got settled in. Now it's midnight local, I'm tired and wired, but don't have to get up until 8. Signing off for Saturday.

Sunday, January 7

Woke up before the wakeup call. Raining, decided breakfast would be granola bars. Minor hassle at registration, good thing I wasn't planning on going to the plenary. Managed to check webcomics and email easily enough, and there was a coat rack so I don't need to lug my coat around all day. Badgeholders are magnetic, which would be nifty if I didn't have a pocket full of electronics. Fortunately there were crappy clipons available...I guess next time I bring my own holder. On the plus side, they were giving out free umbrellas.

Later, got a freebie lanyard and hung my badge from it. Also, instead of giving out CDROMs, some places are giving out jumpdrives. So I signed up for a couple mailing lists and got some 128M drives with archival info on 'em. Also signed up for a raffle at an Aussie Uni's booth for some wine or Vegemite (she wouldn't say how she got it past Customs).

Had a Subway wrap for lunch. More cost but less carbs, and a lot less messy. Tasted good.

Afternoon sessions went okay, several weak talks, though. Ended with a bang. Almost literally, as one guy showed off some pyroacoustics with propane flames.

Walked around downtown before dinner, found a comics/gaming store and a toy store. Gaming store didn't have anything I wanted at a price I was willing to pay, but I didn't check the comics closely. Bought a few things at the toy store, though. Dinner was McDs.

Evening sessions were good. Took many pages of notes at the core curriculum panel, and talked a lot. :) Apparatus Committee went well too.

Back to the hotel a little after 10, used the gym (mostly dumbbell exercises, but I gave the elliptical a try, wheeeeee).

Tomorrow's another late night with the Labs Committee, I think this is my last meeting as a member. I joined in Albuquerque, missed the Miami and Anchorage meetings. Or was Miami before Albuquerque? Hmmm.

Monday, January 8

Wake up call for 7:30 this time. Shower still not draining well, but neither is it completely flooding. Granola for breakfast again, but swung by Rite Aid and snagged some string cheese to supplement it. Glucose this morning (pre and post) has settled back down to my recent norms.

Swept through the exhibit hall before the first session, glomming onto nifty space science freebies for a friend ([livejournal.com profile] thandrak). They were out of free laser pointers and most of the lenticular motion things, though. (Later note: the laser pointers got restocked.)

Wooot, someone's been installing PuTTY on the cafe machines, so I can SSH to eyrie.org and check mail on a full size screen, not just my PDA!

Skipped the awards ceremony in favor of more citywalking, but ended up having lunch at a Subway anyway. Spicy Italian hot as a wrap with a dash of garlic sauce is very yummy.

Afternoon session was pretty interactive (and tiring, on top of all that walking), went back to the hotel to lie around and watch local news before dinner. There's gonna be a little snow tomorrow, and they're scared. Given how many steep elevated roads there are in town, I don't blame 'em.

Looked in the phone book to see if there were any nearby fast food options I'd failed to find, and there was supposedly a KFC a few blocks east of the hotel. But when I got to the location, it was a hole. That's not a value judgement, it was literally a hole, one of the many construction projects in the area. Ah well. Did a little exploring anyway, ended up eating at an entirely new-to-me Subway since I didn't have time to go down to McD or wait at a non-fast food place.

I think I overdid it and pulled/strained my right Achilles tendon. Ow.

Found someone's ring on the floor, cheap and gaudy, but it might have had sentimental value, so I turned it in to the lost and found. On the way over there (it wasn't inside the conference center, but attached to the outside) I found a nice little convenience store and got some milk. No need to trek down to the Rite Aid for breakfast stuff now.

Oddly, Daily Show is on at 10 PM locally, rather than at the 11 PM E/P time. Works for me, though. :)

Forecast to have snow tomorrow night. I may get to snicker at locals who can't walk on ice and snow...and dodge drivers who can't stay off the sidewalks in such conditions. Putting the schaden in schadenfreude.

Tuesday, January 9

Another 7:30 start. Got milk and a danish at that convenience store I found last night, came in and checked mail and some webstuff in my 15 minute allotment. Will go back later to catch the rest.

Crap, just realized I forgot to shave.

Forgot to note it earlier, but the Ames Research Center booth has a Lego orrery. Nifty. Oh, and there's at least two crank booths. An education-related crank I've made the mistake of talking to at previous conferences, and a "there was no Big Bang, here's my far superior theory" AAS crank. I guess there's a quota.

Damn, the conference room chairs are hard and unyielding.

Nifty equipment note: conical right angle "corner cube" reflectors on motion carts to better pick up PASCO sonic rangers.

Last session today was okay, if a bit steeped in unfamiliar high school teacher jargon. Gonna go explore Chinatown before the rain turns into snow and everyone forgets how to keep their cars on the street.

Yay public transportation! Double yay for free buses within downtown! Sure, Chinatown doesn't count as downtown, but I got dropped at the border. No cheap knockoff places that I could find, but plenty of gashopon. Got a mini-Tachikoma at a model and toy shop (was tempted by a clearanced Combattler V at MSIA size, but had to keep luggage issues in mind). And at a grocery mart they had a big selection, ended up getting a chibi tank "Legend of Yawaraka", some Buki Borg dragon/spear/robot transforming toys and a Boukenger "Saikyo" thing that is a sword/robot transformer. Uwajimaya was the second store, more like a mini mall. Came back downtown and McD'd for dinner. Weather nastiness held off until after I was done. :)

Grrr. Came back to the conference center to do a last email check for the day, but the wireless network is being flaky.

Poked around at Gameworks later on, but didn't play any games, not really in the mood.

Conference tradition checklist time. Walked around exploring too much? Yes, several times. Paid for it in limping around the next day? Yep. Got sick enough from eating issues that I had to skip a session? Not so far. Bonus tradition: Find Transformers while at the conference (generally a fandom convention tradition)? Yep. Saw Pepsi Prime, reissue G1 Galvatron and the Japanese Laser Prime at the place I got Tachikoma, plus Classic Mini-Cons ($13 a set!) at the comic shop. :)

Wednesday, January 10

Last day of the conference, everything pretty much shuts down mid-afternoon. Here's hoping things work wireless-wise and the cyber cafe doesn't get shut down early.

Snow ended up not really happening downtown, although there's a chance we'll get some later in the day. Everything was working computer-wise this morning, and I got plenty of dense student email (like one replying to my "class starts the 16th" email asking if missing class on the 11th would be a problem).

Didn't get anything at the book giveaway, ah well.

Just tried to check online wirelessly at 12:30, got an "order now" page. Guess the free wireless has been shut off. Bummer.

PER Symposium getting a late start, but I plan to bail early anyway and go to a research session. The more I look at this, the less useful it seems.

Looks like the wireless issue was transitory, and I also managed to get some terminal time between leaving the symposium and starting the last session.

Was made to look foolish in the last talk of the final regular session, but so was just about everyone else. :) Got in one last email check afterward before they took down the terminals, one last student question answered.

Did finally snow a little, but nothing stuck. For a while it was like tiny snowballs...not sleet or hail, snowballs. Found TF Timelines at the comic shop here, but nothing else from my missing list. A ring shop in the Pike Market had a nifty "slider" ring with a Chinese dragon, very Kiryu, but not in my size, sadly. At Borders I spotted a periodical called Cthulhu Sex Magazine. O_o And yes, it's Mythos erotica, not just a catchy title.

Decided to do dinner at Cheesecake Factory, a non-fast-food place for once. After all, my per diem is assuming more than five bucks for dinner, might as well splurge once this week. :) Fifteen bucks for fish and chips, gonna have to be careful not to overeat if that's actually a good deal. Heh.

Okay, the fish was absolutely scrumptious. But I must've left half a pound of fries uneaten...and not for lack of eating what were probably too many fries. Definitely hitting the gym once I get back to the hotel.

That seems to have done the trick. I did ten minutes on the elliptical and ten on the recumbent bike machine (varying between 50-100 Watts as I messed about with the settings), and according to them burned 100 calories. And I used muscles I hadn't been overusing all day. :) Anyway, my glucose reading was under 80 at the two hours after dinner mark, so I guess I stopped before eating too many fries. Still feel full, though. Yay fish!

Got as much packed tonight as I could, looks like I should be able to get everything else in tomorrow despite being loaded down with swag. Giving all my gear one last charge tonight.

Figured out why Daily Show was on at ten...hotel service is on Comedy Central's East coast feed, so I was seeing what is usually the midnight rerun for me. Stumbled onto Colbert tonight at 8:30.

Thursday, January 11

6:45 wakeup call, since airport shuttle is reserved for 8:30 or so. Granola breakfast again, although if there's time I may go grab a milk.

Looking at the news, it seems we dodged a bullet. Loads of snow and bad roads all over...except downtown, where it's practically dry. SeaTac reportedly is cleared, no delays expected. Whew.

Made it to the airport fine, minimal security hassle, looks like our flight is still on time. Taking some time to stroll around for exercise, and to explore the A terminal some. There's an installation piece that looks like someone eviscerated a giant techno-organic. It's titled "cloudsandclunkers 2006" by Peter Shelton.

Landed in Denver in fog, whee. Not too heavy for safety, though. The other plane is already boarding while we're taxiing into the terminal. Looks like, barring another outbound delay like on Saturday, lunch is granola bars and the Doritos I got on the first leg. Fortunately I got some chicken nuggets in SeaTac, so it's not all snack all day.

Made it on just before the safety lecture, was assured my luggage would make it on. It's looking like I may have row 13 to myself, though, which is nice given that I didn't have time for a restroom break in Denver. Oops, spoke too soon, here comes a couple of small children to sit next to me, whee. Both little girls want to sit in the same seat together, and wail when forced to move and buckle up. Yep, this is gonna be a fun flight. Ended up doing some seat trading to better cluster the family, leaving me on an aisle seat, whew.

After the doors were all closed, THEN we had a half hour delay, so I may run out of book before I run out of trip, grump.

Got into KCI only a little late, thanks to strong tailwinds. While waiting for luggage I checked my spam and found a couple of emails had somehow gotten in there, but nothing that demanded immediate attention. Gonna grab some fast food on the way out of town.

Got home about nine, inbox flooded with just today's panicky student emails, bleh. Signing off for the 2007 AAPT Winter meeting travelblogue!

Oh, and I weighed in at 223 this morning. No real gain or loss during the trip. I'll take it.

Should've thought to give some Seattle tips; the two significant comics shops downtown are Zanadu and one whose name I forget in the basement of Pike Place Market. And I can't believe you were in Seattle for 4 days and apparently never ate at a non-national chain restaurant! And you were even in the International District, where there are some very good restaurants (can't recall the name offhand, but one has the quite good and previously unseen by me strawberry chicken dish I enjoyed a lot the last time I was up there).

Golden Age Collectibles is the one in Pike Place, I went there a couple times. And I don't care for most ethnic foods...or many things that most people consider "fine" dining. :) I am an unadventurous eater.

Yeah, but there's all the local seafood places, and you mentioned fish and chips at the Cheesecak Factory...

Yeah, and I checked a few of them, but often ended up wasting too much time noodling around and needed to grab something fast to make it to a session in time. :)
