Hubble Servicing is GO!

I'll probably have more to say about my weekend conference in Emporia later (other than to briefly note I walked 1.5 miles after lunch today, doing my traditional 'walk all over downtown at some point during the conference' thing), but I wanted to share something I learned at the public lecture given Friday night by special guest George "Pinky" Nelson, former Shuttle mission specialist.

He said that on Tuesday it will be officially announced that there will be one more Hubble-servicing mission, yay! So long as nothing goes horribly wrong before then (like Bush making some public promise to spend NASA's money some other way).

The problem with the Hubble is that it's not in the same orbit as the space station. For safety's sake since the last accident, the Shuttle hasn't been going on any missions that weren't in that orbit...the idea being that if something breaks on takeoff and they reach orbit, they can hole up in the ISS until a rescue mission can be mounted.
