I'll probably have more to say about my weekend conference in Emporia later (other than to briefly note I walked 1.5 miles after lunch today, doing my traditional 'walk all over downtown at some point during the conference' thing), but I wanted to share something I learned at the public lecture given Friday night by special guest George "Pinky" Nelson, former Shuttle mission specialist.

He said that on Tuesday it will be officially announced that there will be one more Hubble-servicing mission, yay! So long as nothing goes horribly wrong before then (like Bush making some public promise to spend NASA's money some other way).

YUSS!

I don't know why Hubble's gotten such a horrible rap from the administration. I mean, maybe it's because it doesn't have side-applications of dropping bombs on people, but it's always struck me as one of the greatest achievements of our age -- a telescope outside the atmosphere, something we've dreamed of for years. Letting it waste away without a replacement just seems like such a loss....

The problem with the Hubble is that it's not in the same orbit as the space station. For safety's sake since the last accident, the Shuttle hasn't been going on any missions that weren't in that orbit...the idea being that if something breaks on takeoff and they reach orbit, they can hole up in the ISS until a rescue mission can be mounted.

All right! I'm not as big a Hubble fanboy as others, but when I heard it was going to be de-serviced, ala Mir, I was a little sad. Felt like kind of a waste. This is great news.

May Hubble continue to bring awesome pictures of space for many years to come.
