Welp, three DVDs came out this week that I was considering getting: Robot Chicken season 1, King Kong, and Godzilla: Monster Mayhem (late 90s cartoon). I only ended up getting Robot Chicken.
Godzilla's non-purchase was simple: no one had it on the shelves. So I got it (and the earlier Mutant Mania set I'd missed seeing when it came out) at deepdiscountdvd.com for six bucks a set. Sure, there may only be three or four eps per disc, but six bucks with free shipping makes that worthwhile.
Kong's situation was a little more complicated. There were four variations on the shelves: regular, deluxe, Wal-Mart exclusive (which looks like it just has a subset of the deluxe edition's extras) and Target exclusive (both regular and deluxe with a mini-comic shrinkwrapped to 'em). But none of them had deleted scenes, which are a major reason I get DVDs. So it looks like I'll be waiting for the inevitable super-duper deluxeriffic version in the faux leather book case that I just KNOW will be coming out in a few months (it may have been officially announced already, I dunno, but it's pretty inevitable). You know, the "Okay, everyone's bought the DVD of the movie, time to milk 'em again for all the bonus content they really wanted," edition.
Oh, and the Wal-Mart employee had to verify I was 17 or older before I could buy Robot Chicken. Yet there was no such restriction on buying a lighter (as a physics instructor, I sometimes need to be able to set things on fire). I think a 12 year old would get into more trouble with a lighter than with an uncensored Robot Chicken DVD.
