Dave's Unspoilt Capsules and Awards
The Week's Picks and Pans, plus Awards of Dubious Merit

Standard Disclaimers: Please set appropriate followups. Recommendation does
not factor in price. Not all books will have arrived in your area this week.
Goodbye James Doohan, Jim Aparo. Rants, Capsules can be found on my
             homepage, http://www.eyrie.org/~dvandom/Rants

First Looks:
Every so often, I'll have the time (either while waiting for comics to
be sorted on Wednesday, or over the weekend) to pull out my PDA and type up
reviews of the stuff I read out of the First Looks pile. Books I end up
buying will be moved down to the Capsules section on Wednesdays. If I don't
give it a recommendation, I'm probably not buying it.
If I read the First Looks on Wednesday, I won't include them in the next
week's review. But if I don't get around to them until the weekend, I'll
include them in the next regular post.

For July 27:

Black Panther v3 #6: Marvel - Eh. Okay climactic battle stuff, and I
could even ignore most of the "Earth-Hudlin" stuff, but no great shakes.
$2.99/$4.25Cn
Machine Teen #3 (of 5): Marvel - I finally realized that this is
essentially a redo of Machine Man's origin, heh. Decent story, but a bit
heavy on the cliches of the sub-subgenre. $2.99/$4.25Cn
Hellions #3 (of 4): Marvel - Clicking along nicely, perhaps a bit TOO by
the numbers, but a decent read. $2.99/$4.25Cn
New X-Men #16: Marvel - HoM tie-in. This makes pretty good use of both
the setting and the established cast of the title, although it brings in a
bunch of others from the X-books. $2.99/$4.25Cn
Fantastic Four #529: Marvel - Every so often, it's good to remind people
that EVERY member of the FF i really dangerous, each for their own reasons.
This is Reed's turn. The Child Welfare subplot is still running and still
stoopid, but at least gets to play for some chuckles. Recommended.
$2.99/$4.25Cn
The Incredible Hulk: Destruction #1 (of 4): Marvel - Hulk is on the
title, but this is really the retelling of the Abomination's origin, updating
it to not rely so much on old Cold War stuff. So far so good on PAD's story,
Muniz's art is a bit too "Image" for my tastes. Recommended. $2.99/$4.25Cn
(note: didn't have time to read the DC books. Theirs ship with the
comics, and always seem to come out of the last box opened. By the time they
showed up tonight, I had everything else and was ready to go.)

Capsules:
Short, relatively spoiler-free reviews of books I actually bring home
(as opposed to reading in preview form in the shop or online). If I get a
book late due to distributor foulups or whatever, I'll put it in the Missing
section.

NHS #130: Antarctic - Ben Dunn returns to the book, albeit just with art
and "additional story elements". It's gonna take more than "elements" to
save this turkey, though. The scripting is pretty awful, and while there's a
few gems, it's not really worth the search. Plus AP already published a
comic with the reality show theme, and PPV kicks NHS #130's butt. Neutral.
$2.99/$4.05Cn
Gold Digger v3 #65: Antarctic - The saga shifts to a comic relief group
and, like so much of this arc, makes them serious. We're swimming DEEP in
continuity now, folks. Recommended. $2.99/$4.05
Conan #18: Dark Horse - Another break from the main story, with two
shorter pieces. Busiek and Nicieza tell the tale of Conan's helmet with art
from John Severin. And Bruce Timm draws the backup tale by Busiek...short,
sweet, and darkly humorous (and with a little bit of nipplege).
Recommended. $2.99
Teen Titans #26: DC - When Raven is on your team, soul-searching isn't
just metaphorical. :) Decent aftermath angst. Recommended. $2.50/$3.50Cn
JSA Classified #1: DC - Well, once again it's time for the "definitive"
origin of Power Girl, and you can be sure it won't be the last time. But it
looks worth reading. $2.50/$3.50Cn
GLA #4 (of 4): Marvel - Okay, clever ending. A bit uneven overall
(pushing it with some lame jokes), but a decent read. Recommended.
$2.99/$4.25Cn
Spider-Man HoM #2 (of 5): Marvel - Act I is exposition, Act II is
complication, and that's pretty much how this series is going. I expect
things to get truly nasty next issue. Mildly recommended. $2.99/$4.25Cn
Hulk #84: Marvel - HoM continues. Gotta love Pyro as the voice of
reason. Good issue overall. Recommended. $2.99/$4.25Cn
eXiles #67: Marvel - Destroy All Monsters! I'd love to see this reality
get its own miniseries. Recommended. $2.99/$4.25Cn
44 Year of Fantastic Four DVD-ROM: Marvel - HUGE improvement over the
Spider-Man CD-ROM set. 1 DVD versus 11 CDs. Mind you, I haven't even looked
at the Spider-Man ones, but I still think this was a good buy. $49.99

Gone Missing:
Stuff that came out some places this week and that I wanted to buy, but
couldn't find for whatever reason, so people don't have to email me asking
"Why didn't you review X?" (If it's neither here nor in the section above,
though, feel free to ask, I might have forgotten about it!)

     Current list as of 7/20:

Tales of the Champions #1, Transformers Way of the Warrior TPB.

Awards:

     said "best" to me again.

Hulk #84: Marvel - HoM continues. Gotta love Pyro as the voice of
reason.

Tee hee! :D

"Tricksy Machine Teen" Award to Hulk #84

I didn't realize he was supposed to be that Machine Teen kid until somebody mentioned it online today.

I only realized it because I'd just read the FL of Machine Teen #3.
