...when you read a review of a local diner that, after mentioning the reviewer has eaten there "about five dozen times" adds the disclaimer, "But I don't know if I'd eat there when sober."
Then there are people like me who got a lot of free buffets and soft drinks by being the DD, but had a small problem getting them back to the dorm when stopped by the cop at the checkpoint:
Cop: "I smell alcohol." Me: "If you have to breathalyze anyone, it has to be me because no one else in this car will pass." Barely coherent Idiot in the back: "Don't tell him that, man..." Cop: "You...are NOT joking are you...? Wow."
Aha. That's reassuring. [Not that I was impugning Clift's self-control, just that it sounded like something he'd say.] I think I've eaten there...twice?...but not intentionally; got dragged there both times, and his assessment seems pretty spot-on. The fact that it's open 24 hours (when it's not on fire -- which, to be fair, has happened only once in recent memory) seems to be its main selling point. I dunno how many people go there given any other option; Village Inn was our typical haunt in grad school.
