Storm front coming through. Power went out. UPS held, I started to back out of things and shut down before the UPS ran out of power. And then we got a nice power surge that tripped the UPS's breakers, and everything shut off anyway. D'oh.
Earlier today I realized that in the event of a lengthy power failure, we'll be bored to tears because while our cable modem and 18-watt firewall (it's a low-power Mini-ITX box) are on a UPS, our laptop batteries will only last about 30-45 minutes (I have a theory that laptop batteries have a half-life of one year, so my two-year-old laptop's battery only holds 1/4 the charge it did when new). So I might get a UPS on sale and tuck it behind the sofa.
Of course, I'm making the assumption that the cable service will continue during a power outage. ;)

Oh, that UPS...
Perhaps I've said too much.
