One or more spammers decided to start forging their reply-to with my email address today, so I'm getting buried under all the bounce messages from dead email accounts and moderated lists. I've learned how to use .procmailrc to filter out a big chunk of it by content (most of it is for fake watches, porn, and boner pills), but even what's still getting through is kinda annoying. And I expect I'm going to end up in a lot of spam filters now, so my genuine emails won't get through. Pfui.

Ugh...been there. That's why I quit using Hotmail, actually.

I've had that happen. It sucks, but at the same time most people who you would want to contact either know not to block from you or you have alternate contact methods for.

Or at least, such was the case with me.

Most modern spam filters should recognize spoofed "From" fields. Sadly, a lot of not-so-modern mail servers are running out there.

Funny related story: back in 2000, during the presidential ramp-up, the company I worked for had agreed to run mass email servers for one of the candidates. Not surprisingly, some spammer, likely a spam-bot, latched onto our emails and started using "From" fields that ultimately ended up bouncing back to us. Some ended up bouncing to our CEO who, being a Computer Engineer with his doctorals, immediately recognized that our systems had obviously been compromised and someone was using our servers to send SPAM.

We hadn't, but it took months and many slow, careful explanations to convince him our addresses had been spoofed, and that our options to stop outside parties from doing this were pretty close to zero.

I vaguely recall you (or maybe it was Doug Dlin?) receiving a spam message from my former address on saberwind.com (I no longer own that domain, for a while someone used it for a gaming site, but now it's just used for crap). I'm convinced the Internet will implode someday soon due to spam wasting 99% of the total available bandwidth.
