Re: Better!

Unsurprisingly, some wit edited the sign to say exactly that. I took it down.

Re: Better!

There's a Chinese restaurant in Westboro, MA, where the late Derek Bacon and I used to go to lunch a lot when we worked at Leading Edge. They had one of those obligatory "must wash hands" signs in the bathroom, but the wording was a bit off and they never did get it quite right. Originally it said "EMPLOYEES MUST WASH HANDS BEFORE YOU RETURN TO WORK", but, as Derek pointed out, that was a bit ambiguous. Did it mean that the employees had to wash their hands before he and I could go back to work? Or possibly some entirely unrelated hands? And if so, how many hands? In either case, how long was that going to take, because we had to be back in the office by 1:30.

A little while after he made that observation (to me; he was too polite to mention it to the staff), we discovered that it had been changed. It now said "EMPLOYEES MUST WASH YOUR HANDS BEFORE YOU RETURN TO WORK". Derek and I agreed that that did clarify the situation, and though it represented quite a commitment to customer service, we still thought it might tend to be a little bit inconvenient, to say nothing of a trifle embarrassing. I mean, did they assume that we were so incompetent at handwashing that we needed the restaurant staff to help us with it, or what?
