Typing this at the comic shop on their network. Took a couple tries to get connected, not sure if it's me or them, though. I put the 128 bit key onto a sticky, though (the software kind), cut and paste is pretty much mandatory for that sort of thing. :)

I've found two small problems today that I hadn't noticed before. One, when my index fingertip is too dry, the touchpad has trouble recognizing it. Of course, I have that thumb trackball, so not a huge problem. Two, ctrl-space seems to be bound to a system thing, which makes erasing big blocks of text in emacs harder. Will have to look into rebinding that.

Edit: EEEUser Forum helped me with the second one. It's bound to SCIM, which doesn't look to be something I need to use (it makes it easier to switch to non-English keyboard layouts), so I followed instruction on the EEE Wiki to "remove" it (really just takes it off the "turn on at startup" list).

Emacs. Shudder.

So, is the 4GB sufficient so far? I could always double that with a keyfob but I'm thinking it might be smarterer to mod the thing to add another hub internally.

Well, I've only had it since Friday, so I haven't hit memory issues yet. :) I did get a 2GB SD card (Target has 'em on sale for $19) which almost triples the usable memory (2.7GB is taken up by pre-installed stuff). I don't really plan to use this as a music machine, though, and otherwise there's not a lot of memory-hogging stuff I'm likely to generate.

16Gb SDHC card for $60; http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820211245

Easier than modding, it doesn't stick out, doesn't take up any of the limitted USB ports, and works just fine with the EEE.

I figure, by the time I outgrow my 2GB SD card (if I do!), 16GB cards will be $20. ;)

Yeah, ebooks aren't big :-) I just got 16Gb 'cos I'm half considering an XP build booted off the SD card. Or maybe a "real" Linux distro. Not sure. The limitted one that comes with the machine is very annoying for things like bluetooth.

That, and I figure most of the stuff I'll be putting on will be text files and the occasional Powerpoint and spreadsheet. Lots of Open Office stuff, not particularly big.

Yep. Card slot, three USB2 ports, an ethernet/LAN port, 15 pin monitor out port, modem port, plus jacks for headphones and external microphone (there's a built-in mic too). There's even a Kensington lock port, on the off chance you want to do something weird like chain it down.

Hm. The modders seem to be doing interesting things with it; when they manage a touchscreen, I'll be completely unable to resist.

The modders have installed a touchscreen, at least according to eeeuser.com. The word on an official touchscreen is that Asus considered it, but market research told them that the demand wasn't there for whatever it would have cost at the retail end ($15 manufacturer cost to add a 4-wire touchscreen probably translates into $100 retail).

Hm. I hadn't see one but now ... OK, I don't get to do it until I finish putting together my media PC.
