Finally bought a UPS. Not a high-end one, just a 10 or so minute supply, but given that every year we get half a dozen "blips" that are just enough to power things down, I figure it's worthwhile. Also replaced all my old power strips, on the grounds that these things do wear out eventually. Now my ratsnest is at least a little better organized, and I have space for a few more things (like the wireless router I ordered last night). In theory I can also recharge my EEE off one of the new strips, although I'll probably just stick it in one of the "surge protected but not battery-backuped" outlets on the UPS.

If you don't use Samba (the networked file-sharing daemon) you can disable it by editing one of the startup files. Google for EEE User will very quickly lead you to places which can help you do that.

If you do use it, you'll want to perhaps create a script to enable and disable it so you minimize the open-ness.

This is one of the places where Linux becomes vulnerable to viruses - when it tries to be compatible with Windows.
