It turns out you can't opt out of SEEING those stupid "graphical preview" things, you can only pick whether your own LJ generates 'em. That strikes me as the exact opposite of how it should work...why should I care if others can see little graphical previews, I only care about getting rid of the stupid things when I'm reading someone else's page.

Edit: [livejournal.com profile] gary_williams has the solution! When the window pops up, click on the little gear symbol and pick "disable" from the dropdown. This will load a little control screen that lets you to tell it to go away for either just "this site" (dunno if that means all LJ, or just that particular person's journal) or for all. It's probably tied to cookies, though, so you'll need to disable it on every machine you use and re-disable if you clear your cookies. Still, it's a way to opt out, if not an obvious one.

You too, huh? I browse from an older computer, so it's doubly annoying because this thing wasn't designed to handle it.

Yeah, I saw that the other day. I want to find the genius who came up with pop-up-video-blogging and slap them with a fish.

No, no. I want a chorus of mimes to follow them around and every time they look at someone as if they were going to talk to them, the mimes jump in between and start acting out what they think he's going to say.

Why do I say "he"? I just think this one came from a male.

I've made some userContent.css (http://www.gpwilliams.ca/~gwilliams/firefox_tips.shtml) rules for Firefox to modify the appearance of other websites. I think I might be able to make one that removes those previews from livejournal.

I really don't mind the popups used on LJ, as they are only for when people post links to sites. However...I -hate- the double underlined key word search popups found on other news-type sites. Here's a random word in a paragraph, we will make an obnoxious ad popup every time you mouseover it!

Is it something you need to opt-out of, or opt IN to. I've seen them, but I'm not aware that my journal has been generating them. as long as I have to turn it on, no worries, as I haven't. If it's the other way I want to turn it off.

I didn't even realize there was such a thing. How do I disable mine from doing it? I had a hard time getting my website hosted on yahoo to not collect cookies a while back too, it seems that they diliberlty build in annoying features.

solution found!

When the pop-up appears, there's a gear icon with an options menu, underneath which you can disable them.

Do you mean the Snap.com previews of external links? (see LJ News (http://news.livejournal.com/103674.html) for the announcement of these)

In Firefox, at least, AdBlock Plus kills them dead, dead, dead. See http://community.livejournal.com/lj_nifty/155338.html (http://community.livejournal.com/lj_nifty/155338.html) for more tips on killing these off.
