Cybook Gen 3, another e-paper book reader. About the same price as the Kindle (the magic $400 barrier). No keyboard, no wireless connection (it comes with a USB cable to use for book downloading), so I certainly won't be getting one (the Kindle at least tempts because it can act as a wireless browser). However, for those not keen on the Kindle's DRM, the Cybook uses the Mobipocket format and has a strategic alliance with Baen.com, the champions of the non-DRM'ed "thieves wouldn't be paying for our product anyway, so we're not losing sales" style business model.

Edit: I am further informed that the Cybook has the advantage that you can buy it, buy books for it, and get warranty support for it outside the U.S.

Interesting. Mobipocket format _can_ be DRMd which may still be a killer, and it's still definitely too expensive. But interesting!

Of course, as a startup, you can dump the entire Baen Free Library onto the Cybook. Or as much as will fit, anyway. And there's CD disc images of a bunch of other free-to-circulate Baen books in Mobipocket (and other) format. So you could get the equivalent of hundreds of dollars worth of books free for the Cybook with little effort. Obviously a more limited selection, though, since it's all SF, and the Kindle has a wider range to work with.

In any case, I just read my Baen ebooks on my PDA.

Still 100-150 dollars too much, and still lacks some general purpose PDA qualities that I want.
