On a whim, I decided to drive out to Salina today, a small city an hour's drive to the west of Manhattan KS, and outside the Flint Hills (so it's in the "flat as Kansas" part of Kansas).

A couple things of note:

- There is a gas station/convenience store chain called Green Lantern. Yes, I know trademarks are split up along sectors, and DC probably never tried to register the trademark in whatever sector covers convenience stores...but I still found it amusing. I also saw a lot of Sinclair stations, so I guess those aren't all dead after all.

- Just outside Abilene is one of those porn superstores. Some religious group bought billboards on the offramps and onramps covered in religious verses and the claim "Pornography destroys" (italics theirs). The store itself looks like a converted steakhouse. Something tells me its customers fall into two main groups: those who reject the message of the billboards, and those who are already about as self-loathing due to religion as it's possible to get anyway.

"I reject your reality and substitute my own!"

(IHNJ, IJLS "porn superstores". It makes me think of something truly vast and prominent upon the landscape, with a huge lighted sign, a national advertising campaign, acres of parking lot, dozens of checkout lanes and hundreds of shoppers. A sort of pornographic Super Wal-Mart. With its accompanying warehouse club across the street... )
