I don't like smartphones, on the grounds they're bulky for phones but a bit small as PDAs, plus a lot of them tend to be tied into a particular service provider. However, my Palm Tungsten won't live forever, and I'd really like something pocket-sized that does the same sorts of things. A friend has suggested the iPod Touch, and it seems reasonable, but I'd like other options.

The question is, how crippled would something like a Treo or an EnV be if I didn't sign up for phone service at all? Are there any smartphones that work just fine as keyboarded PDAs (I reallllly like keyboards, and have largely lost my ability to do stylus writing) and can by synched with a Mac desktop without needing to buy into the wireless plan?

I use my PDA's calendar function frequently to remind myself to do things later, like remembering to grade things in the morning if I put it off in the afternoon, or do something when I get home, etc. Today I set a reminder that turned out to be a little too terse. Just "GG22" set to alarm at 8PM.

There was nothing on TV at 8PM that fit. Girl Genius doesn't do paper issue numbering anymore. GaoGaiGar would have been GGG. So what the frak was I trying to remind myself of?

FINALLY, after about 20 minutes of wracking my brain and wandering the apartment looking for things that GG might stand for (comics, toys, DVDs, etc) I finally realized I meant Grantville Gazette vol 22, which is now ready for download as I discovered while at work. D'oh.

Cryptic cat iz cryptic.
