Apparently, there's another disgusting way to prepare herring other than lutefisk, and it's called surstromming. British Airways and Air France have had to start asking Swedish passengers to not bring the stuff on board, because when the cabin pressure drops (airplane cabins are pressurized, yes, but at less than a full atmosphere) the tins have a tendency to explode, spattering everything nearby with foul-smelling fermented herring.
