Armed with VINs, I poked at my policy some more. The actual 3Wagon turns out to cost as much as the notional one ($120/month), but the actual Fusion (a V6) costs a bit more than the notional one ($95/month). If I raise my comprehensive deductible on the 3Wagon from $100 to $250 (one notch up), the insurance cost drops to $110/month, so it pays for itself if I need to make claims less often than once per 15 months (and I haven't made a claim in years, so barring Murphy it looks reasonable). Notching up one more, to a $500 deductible, only saves another $5/month, so no point in doing that. Since the V6 Fusion would be about four grand more than the 3Wagon, the insurance difference is reasonable.

Now to remember to bring along some pay stubs and bug the loan officer at my credit union to get an independent estimate of interest on a loan.
