The building I work in has three full stories (and a basement), plus a sort of squat tower in the middle for the 4th and 5th stories. The fire marshal isn't keen on the top two floors being used for offices because there's only one non-elevator way out...sure, we can get onto the roof pretty easily, but there's no way to get from the roof to the ground at accelerations of less than 9.8m/s2. My office is on the 4th floor (an improvement over the 5th, which the elevators don't even go to!).
This summer, they're going to be fixing the elevators again. They will also be renovating the main stairwell to make it less of a fire hazard. It is entirely possible that there will be a conjunction of these two that will prevent me from getting to my office for a week or so during the summer. And I can't just go on vacation during that time, since I'm going to be teaching summer classes. Fortunately, there's a computer-filled lab that won't be used over the summer, and we can all move into that for a couple weeks in a pinch, although the machines are on the old side and will need some updating before any of us with network accounts can actually use them. And, theoretically, food and drink are completely banned in that room. And there's no security within the room for locking up exams and so forth.
I'm tempted to look into hanging a rope ladder from the roof. At least the department head managed to talk them out of renovating the lecture halls in the middle of the summer term. We were going to have to teach our classes in another building, with no access to our demonstration equipment.
