Okay, here's something that, if posted just about anywhere else, would probably earn a reply of GAFB. I already touched on it over in the som_pos community, but what the heck, I'm running my office hours and don't want to get involved in doing anything I'd resent being interrupted during.

The topic of this rambling is the Hostess Fruit Pie. Specifically, the lemon type.

Y'see, while I like a lot of fruit flavors, I find most fruit textures to be disgusting. So, while I was bombarded in my youth with Hostess Fruit Pie ads in comics, I found that most of the flavors didn't really work for me. Until I found the lemon flavor.

Due to the intrinsic nastiness of actual lemon slices, Hostess wisely chose to put what amounted to lemon pudding (well, filling for lemon meringue pies) in their Lemon Fruit Pies, rather than using the standard "chunks of fruit in a sweet goo" approach used for every other variety. So, nice sweet lemon flavor and no nasty pulpy chunks (usually, see below). And since lemon meringue pie was my favorite kind of pie as a kid, this was an acceptable substitute.

Of course, there are pitfalls.

Once in a great while, a bit of lemon pulp does find its way into a pie. Needless to say, hitting this is particularly nasty, and it's put me off Hostess Fruit Pies for months at a time after the event.

Also, because the filling is pudding-like, it behaves like pudding as it dries out. Hostess Fruit Pie packaging is crimped wax paper, and is not totally moistureproof...water will slowly escape the pie. As this happens, the filling starts to shrink, with three unpleasant results.

One, you tend to get a lot of mouthfuls of hollow pastry shell. Don't get me wrong, the shell isn't too bad on its own, but it's a bit dry and crumbles all over the place making a bigger mess when hollow than when full.

Two, the sourness goes up as the whole thing becomes more concentrated.

Three, it eventually reaches a consistency like caulk.

I once made the mistake of buying a big pile of Fruit Pies at the Hostess store, and by the time I was only halfway through the stack, they had become truly nasty. So much for saving money. :/ So check that "sell by" date and take it seriously!

Currently, I have no lemon pies, so sad. The store was out of them yesterday, so I got chocolate pies instead (Dolly Madison brand, but the same basic idea...chocolate pudding instead of lemon).

Happy, Randy?
