So, the last time my work machine got upgraded was back in 2003 when XP got put on. When I had IT check it out a few weeks ago for another issue (Office was lagging a lot) they did a doubletake when they realized I only had a 600MHz machine. They promised to fix me up with a hand-me-down 1.8GHz, which finally happened yesterday.

And it wouldn't turn on. So they put my old box back in and took the newer one down to look at. Turned out the power supply was bad.

Tried again. Took ten minutes to log in, then froze while they were running speed tests. Took it back down, brough old box back up.

Today they came back with an entirely different hand-me-down. Turns out the one from yesterday was a lightning casualty from Anderson Hall (a big storm the week before classes were to start took out a LOT of machines across campus) that was more fried than they'd been led to believe. :)

Of course, the machine I now have took two minutes or so to log in, and it turned out I *did* have Firefox on my C drive of the old machine, so I had to download it again, but here's hoping no other problems. And that Office doesn't lag so much anymore. :)

Nifty! I snagged four Gateway all-in-ones from Durland a couple of weeks ago, and they're just awesome -- 2.8 GHz, 512 MB RAM, sturdy enough for day-to-day chores. We got a few PCs free from the library, too -- 2 GHz, but 256 MB of (sigh) Rambus RAM, not enough to run Photoshop, and to get the free PCs we had to take their associated 21" CRTs, too. Gah. (I dropped one, so now there are only three monitors.)

But these are all better machines than the GTAs had, so they're pleased, I think.
