Well, today I got an iPod Shuffle (I could have afforded a full model, but the Shuffle actually meets my needs better than a Mini or full size). And after filling it 3/4 of the way, I noticed the Free Comic Book Day Mini-Mates figure I had stuck to my iLamp monitor border..."This guy needs a Shuffle control pad on his chest."

And so I do'ed it.

And I was delighted to find out that the hole in the top of the head was just the right size for an earbud jack.

PS: that's pretty much the only way I'm gonna use the included earbuds. I find earbuds hurt and never stay in properly, so I got some earhook 'phones to use instead.

One of your needs is for a complete inability to control what your portable music device is playing? How... odd.

Yep! Because I want music as a PASSIVE thing. I don't want to have to think about messing with playlists or ordering while I'm actually listening. I want it to be a radio station that always gets good reception and never plays songs I hate. And if for whatever reason I don't want to listen to the song that comes up, I just hit "next". I don't do audiobooks either, although with those you just set it on playlist mode and put the books up top on the list.

That, and I want the small size, which eliminates the Mini and full-size iPod, plus most other high-memory MP3 players. And since I own a Mac, it's easier to use than another brand of MP3 player of the same size. And checking around, the prices are pretty close for anything with a 1GB memory anyway.

Well, whatever floats your cruiser, I suppose. I'd get dead sick of going "no... no... no... no... " after a while. It'd be like having... well, like having a copy of iTunes that could only do Party Shuffle. :)

As for size, I find myself wishing that the regular iPod was a little more substantial. I recognize that this makes no modern-world sense whatsoever, but see, I have a size/weight threshold below which I just don't trust gadgets. If it doesn't have a little heft to it, I become subconsciously convinced that I'm going to lose/break it...

I'm taking limited safe pocket space into account. The Shuffle slips in next to my PDA in my shirt pocket, no hassle. Not enough room in there for a Mini, though, and I'm leery of putting things in my pants pockets because of possible crushage. I don't want to have to replace all my shirts with two-pocket models just to accomodate tunes, and I'd rather not be stuck with the lanyard.

Can't you load up a playlist on there? I think I'll get a shuffle eventually, and I can see myself sticking in a new playlist every day.

DVD- the minimate rules! I'd love to see it next to an iKub.

Yes, you can just throw a playlist in there and play everything in order. That's what I do with my shuffle - load it up with a few CDs every night while I'm goofing around on the computer and then listen to it the next day.

Some days, I just throw random songs in and some days I pick what I want to hear. I actually like a random mix of music sometimes.

Yeah, playlist order is preserved. I just stuffed things on it for the first try, but if I want to do a mixed list (songs and radio shows/audiobooks/other long form) I'll just put the long stuff at the top so I can get to it easily in playlist mode.

My friend's only complaint with it was that she had to upgrade to 10.4 to use it. :) It was a b-day present from her husband.

I have an old g3 one that I REALLY need to send in the class action thingy for...

Huh. I'm still in 10.3.something, and it works fine. If I recall the instructions correctly, you only need the most recent updates of OS if you want to charge it from a low-power USB port, and I have a couple of high-power hubs sitting around so I just used a port on one of them.

*LAUGHS*
that's awesome DVD :-)

I got a mini...but the ear-buds vanished...not a huge deal as I have others, but I just hate not knowing where they are...they're plotting something...I'm sure of it.
