Superman: Doomsday sucks

More details in the review post tomorrow, but I figured I'd warn anyone who hadn't gotten it yet. Capizzi's bad writing overcomes all possible good points. This is a stinkburger of the highest magnitude.

What happened to "I'll wait for it to come on Crtoon Network?"

Than pointed out it had Timm as director. I figured, "how bad could it be?" The answer is ALL THE BAD THERE IS. Minus, so far, one cool scene where Evil Clone Superman strokes a persian cat he's just saved from a tree and threatens an old lady.

It has a Persian cat? This I must see!

Kilby was indifferent to it. He didn't like the redesigns, but I believe he enjoyed Luthor's VA.

VA?

Is that anything like a PA?

[identity profile] dvandom.livejournal.com 2007-09-19 11:57 am (UTC)(link)
Voice Actor. James Marsters voiced Luthor (but not Brainiac).

Um... what did you expect from a book about a character who was created solely to be tougher than Superman, with no other character traits worth mentioning?

Sometimes you don't need to read a book to know it's going to bite big wind called Mariah.

[identity profile] redneckgaijin.livejournal.com 2007-09-19 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
Or a video, for that matter.

[identity profile] dvandom.livejournal.com 2007-09-19 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
Dude. Capizzi doesn't even write DOOMSDAY properly. You know how hard it is to mischaracterize someone created solely to be an invincible and unstoppable killing machine who won't stop until what he's attacking is dead? But Capizzi pulls it off.

Huh. I had expectations of watch-ability after reading a positive review somewhere...but this saddens me. Can't anything Adam Baldwin does -- except Independence Day and Full Metal Jacket -- succeed?

[identity profile] funct.livejournal.com 2007-09-19 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. . . Our tastes definitely align on toys, but not at all on comics-related things. I loved the movie, and frankly can't see what problem you would have with it.

[identity profile] recharge138.livejournal.com 2007-09-19 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
First bad review I've seen.

Does it differ strongly from the comic? I like the comic.

[identity profile] z4nd4r.livejournal.com 2007-09-19 06:51 am (UTC)(link)
I've seen 1 good and 2 bad.

[identity profile] syringavulgaris.livejournal.com 2007-09-19 10:59 am (UTC)(link)
Heh. Which comic? There've been an awful lot of varying treatments of Superman in the last N years.

[identity profile] recharge138.livejournal.com 2007-09-19 02:12 pm (UTC)(link)
The Death of Superman storyline it's based on.

[identity profile] dvandom.livejournal.com 2007-09-19 11:59 am (UTC)(link)
The core ideas are kept. Doomsday shows up, Superman dies in destroying him. Fake Superman shows up soon after the funeral, turns out to be evil. Superman isn't really dead, just in a deathlike coma, and ends up recovering at the Fortress for a while before coming back and facing the evil clone. They just took out all the non-Superman characters and winnowed Reign down to one replacement instead of four.

In broad strokes, the plot is decent, and a good adaptation. It's the scripting I find so horrible, with attendant bad characterization.

[identity profile] syringavulgaris.livejournal.com 2007-09-19 10:58 am (UTC)(link)
Also, did they really feel it necessary to handfeed the raving ho-yay legions?

[identity profile] syringavulgaris.livejournal.com 2007-09-19 01:36 pm (UTC)(link)
It's what comes before slash.

1) People watch TV and perceive lots of homoerotic subtext, or "Ho-Yay!" as the kids call it these days.
2) People write slash based on it.
3) Profit!

Smallville has seriously entrenched the "Clark + Lex 4-EVER!" idea into the vulnerable segment of the fanbase, and the fight between Superman and Luthor in this here movie is not helping.

[identity profile] dvandom.livejournal.com 2007-09-19 01:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, yes. The "Who's your daddy?" sequence. That was so horribly codependently homoerotic, yeah.

[identity profile] susp.livejournal.com 2007-09-19 12:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I . . . totally disagree with you. I rather enjoyed the movie overall, especially the fight scenes. And the parts that had my roommate and I sitting up and saying, "Holy shit!"
