Taken when I was 10 years old, as near as I can figure, around 1980. For a while, I was making lots of paper spaceships with rolled up cones as the core, inspired by the Fiery Phoenix from Battle of the Planets. The wings would be the "flying wing" style of paper airplane (roll up half of the sheet into a leading edge) taped on, and then various other details. They never flew very well, even with canards, at best gliding in for landings.
This one had a booster engine fashioned from a thick cardboard tube I'd gotten somewhere (possibly from scavenging at Big Junk Pickup Day, I did that a lot back then). I think I was about to detach the main ship from the booster and fly it down the staircase...which should give you an idea of the typical glide profile of these bad boys.
Picture is from a cache of stuff I brought home from my visit to the old homestead last month, finally unpacking some of it. I'll scan my first (and last) knitting project at some point, and maybe relate the tale of my very first customizing injury (unrelated to knitting)....
