There is also the question of why you'd want wires anyway, if the machine can fly, why not take the straight-line route rather than have to curve around ground obstacles?

Weather, power supply (i.e. the cables can supply electricity so less fuel is needed), pilot training reduction, likely some other benefits.

True. I would like to see a rigid helium-zeppelin with a large solar array on top, though. Not so good in cars but it has been proven to work with yachts. Blimps have a lot more surface area to work with.
