Maps

Maps can be nifty, and they can also be depressing.

After taking a "let's see where this goes" drive the other weekend, I decided I needed a better map of the state than the AAA one I've been using, and picked up one of those big DeLorme Atlas & Gazetteer books for Kansas.

Nifty: The scale is 1mm = 200m, so I can actually see details like the intersection where I live. EVERY town and city is listed, even those that are so small that the 2mm wide dot covers all their cross streets.

Depressing: There are entire townships in Kansas (mostly western) with no towns. A few roads, but the minimum "block" size is about a kilometer on a side or even more. Having lived most of my life in pretty densely populated areas, that feels kinda desolate.

Oh I dunno, the idea of not having ANY neighbors for miles sounds rather appealing to me. Too bad it's in Flatland there :)

For fun I was checking real estate prices out your way. I could afford a freaking MANSION out there for what I'm paying in rent here! But again, that lack of any real scenery, or even terrain... ;)

Oh, I'm in the hilly part of the state. It's hilly enough I haven't bought a bike, since to get to work requires either going a mile or two extra out of my way (on a 2 mile trip) or go up and down some hills I'd have to push the bike up and ride the brakes down.

And, as the topo maps I got show, even the "flat" parts are gently rolling.

That and you would have a decrease in pay...adjusted to the cost of living here. You could still afford something nice if you moved here.

You should take a look at Montana sometime.
