Dave's Unspoilt Capsules and Awards
The Week's Picks and Pans, plus Awards of Dubious Merit
Standard Disclaimers: Please set appropriate followups. Recommendation does
not factor in price. Not all books will have arrived in your area this week.
8 days is way too long to have a cold. Rants, Capsules can be found on my
homepage, http://www.eyrie.org/~dvandom/Rants
First Looks:
Every so often, I'll have the time (either while waiting for comics to
be sorted on Wednesday, or over the weekend) to pull out my PDA and type up
reviews of the stuff I read out of the First Looks pile. Books I end up
buying will be moved down to the Capsules section on Wednesdays. If I don't
give it a recommendation, I'm probably not buying it.
If I read the First Looks on Wednesday, I won't include them in the next
week's review. But if I don't get around to them until the weekend, I'll
include them in the next regular post.
For April 13 -
Black Panther v3 #3: Marvel - There is no longer any doubt this
issue...total reboot retcon time here. Joy. If they had launched this in
the Ultimate line, I'd probably start buying it now, as the story taken in
isolation isn't too bad. But it's the "who cares what the old readers think"
attitude exuded by this book (not gonna blame this all on Hudlin, he's not
the one who decided on the line and trade dress) that ensures that *this* old
reader won't be buying. $2.99/$4.25Cn
eXiles #62: Marvel - The cover proclaims this is the secret origin, but
it's more like the lead-in to the origin. Interesting enough read, though.
Recommended. $2.99/$4.25Cn
New Thunderbolts #7: Marvel - Story-wise, it's a fairly standard "wrap
up and catch your breath" issue, but the involvement of Sienkiewicz adds a
bit of spice. Oh, and Fabe isn't afraid to use the real Condi. Recommended.
$2.99/$4.25Cn
Capsules:
Short, relatively spoiler-free reviews of books I actually bring home
(as opposed to reading in preview form in the shop or online). If I get a
book late due to distributor foulups or whatever, I'll put it in the Missing
section.
Marvel Team-Up #7: Marvel - New logo, without the often misleading
headliners. More good wallowing in continuity from Kirkman and Kolins.
Recommended. $2.25/$3.25Cn
Hulk #80: Marvel - More mindgame fun, including a final panel that SOOOO
many fans probably wish wasn't just another game. :) Recommended.
$2.99/$4.25Cn
Great Lakes Avengers #1 (of 4): Marvel - Yay, Slott and Pelletier
together again! This is actually played fairly straight, aside from the
squirrelly "chorus", and it mostly focuses on Mr. I's origins. Good read.
Recommended. $2.99/$4.25Cn
Ultimate Fantastic Four #17: Marvel - Ben's time to shine. Or smash a
lot of stuff. Same diff. Fun read. Recommended. $2.25/$3.25Cn
Twisted ToyFare Theater vol 5: Wizard - Ah, more collected
twistedness...what more to say? It's sophomoric humor, done well.
Recommended. $12.99/$15.99Cn
Manga Secrets: Impact - Yet another how to draw manga book, the only
reason I picked it up is because it's by Lea Hernandez. Plus it has Nan-1-1
as a narrator and plenty of examples taken from Rumble Girls. The usual
basics of anatomy and character design are covered, with Nan in or narrating
comic pages at the chapter breaks. One cool feature near the end is how Lea
goes over several pages from Rumble Girls and critiques them, both the
"things you should do" and "things I did wrong" aspects. Recommended.
$19.99/$28.99Cn
Love as a Foreign Language v1, v2: Oni Press - This series is digest
sized, 64 pages per installment, coming in between the usual comic length and
the usual TPB/digest length. In a way, Torres manages to use this to be
"decompressed" and still tell a solid chunk of story in one sitting, although
I'm dubious he was actually driven by the decompression thing. :) Anyway,
vol 1 sets up the main character as a Canadian being driven slowly insane by
life in Seoul, while vol 2 sets up the seemingly hopeless love that might
make him stick around. There's a lot of funny bits, but I dunno if I'll be
sticking around, since "hopeless longing" stories are not even remotely in
the range of things I like to read. $5.95 for vol 1, $6.95 for vol 2.
Gone Missing:
Stuff that came out some places this week and that I wanted to buy, but
couldn't find for whatever reason, so people don't have to email me asking
"Why didn't you review X?" (If it's neither here nor in the section above,
though, feel free to ask, I might have forgotten about it!)
Current list as of 3/30:
Savage Henry Puppet Trap, Savage Henry Powerchords #2, Flare #2, Bill
and Ted's Excellent Adventures v1 TPB, Essential Luke Cage v1.
Awards:
Best Book: Ultimate Fantastic Four #17, mostly for Ben Grimm.
"One Ring To Master Them All" Award to Marvel Team-Up #7
"Okay, Let's Try THIS Theory" Award to Hulk #80
"Guess He's Not An Anomaly Anymore" Award to Great Lakes Avengers #1 (of 4)
"A Ripping Good Time" Award to Ultimate Fantastic Four #17
"Green Choo-Choo Bear?" Award to Twisted ToyFare Theater vol 5
"Needs Some Floaty Buttcovers" Award to Manga Secrets
"Eastern Alienation" Award to Love As A Foreign Language v1 and v2
Dave Van Domelen, "I'm on fire now, Reed." - Ben Grimm, not really worried.

If the former was the case, maybe they feel they can pick up new readers with slight changes to the story?

Besides, these aren't slight changes. It's a reboot, using the same names and costumes, but ditching all the old stories. And it's a dishonest one, trying to act like things are business as usual.
