And if LJ does go foom?

Looking over the most recent 25 entries, I don't really see much that needs archiving. Most of my posts are of the "look at this thing over there I did" variety, or vapid observations on this and that. What I'd really miss is the community aspect, the web of people I'm connected to. And I like the way LJ sets up friends list pages, with the ability to make it the entire window and not just a sidebar somewhere amid the "we're a portal to everything!" layout that most social networks seem to favor.

Obviously, I'm pretty easy to find if LJ goes foom. But you might want to make a note that I have a gmail account (same ID as LJ and everything else I do) as a backup "everything just went to pot" address. I don't check it a lot, but I do check it at least a few times a week, and if LJ does detonate I'll definitely check it for refugees. :)

This is new to me, is LJ likely to detonate?

Ah, you must have missed the Dramapocalypse today. LJ laid off a big chunk of its stateside staff, leading to predictions of the imminent demise of LJ.

I missed it entirely. Any place I can get info?

Click on my friends list, there's several posts in there with links to it and discussion thereof.

Gah! I'm glad you brought this up. Time to archive.

I hope it doesn't go foom, but I will miss reading the flist if it does.

I like the flist. It works well for me in a lot of ways.

Is there an easy way to archive LJ entries? I have an awful lot, and there's some sentimental attachment. It really has been my journal for several years now.

On the other hand, I'm not about to copy/paste several hundred entries.

LJArchive (http://fawx.com/software/ljarchive/) exists for Windows boxes, apparently very easy to use. LJdump (http://hewgill.com/ljdump/) is more broadly usable, although I haven't tried it yet.

I tried LJdump. Wow! Nice and easy.

And holy crap... I have 561 entries.

I clearly missed something obvious, but when I try to run LJDump it can't find the config file.

Did you copy the ljdump.config.sample file to ljdump.config and edit that file?

Oddly, while clicking on the ljdump.py icon doesn't work, chdir'ing into the relevant directory in Terminal and typing ./ljdump.py worked fine. Over 1700 entries backed up.
