Haven't seen the anime in question. Is it just really popular?

It's popular online in a memey fashion, and the subtitled set came out on DVD here over the past couple months. Dubs are coming a little more slowly. It takes the "with guts, anything is possible" idea of a lot of super robot shows and turns it up to eleven...million. It even made the national news briefly because a contest to suggest a new British flag a while back included an entry with the Team Gurren flaming skull logo and it did very well in the voting.
