Random retail observations

Wal-Mart didn't have the Metalocalypse DVD set, but did have the one-disc version of Caligula. Hastings had the 4-disc Caligula, which has both the theatrical release and the test audience version, plus "hours" of unused footage. The mind boggles. (Oh, and Target did have Metalocalpyse, looks like all the bonus features are easter eggs.)

Found some Marvel Battle Sliderz at Dollar Tree. Would be unremarkable except that "Thor" looks an awful lot like Galactus. :)

Wal-Mart's exclusive pack-in with Fantastic Four is a digest-sized version of the DK "Cosmic Guide" to the FF, very nice. Not so nice is that it's packed in with the stripped-down one-disc version of the movie (which has both aspect ratios and commentary track, that's it). Target's exclusive is a digest-sized version of the Silver Surfer's origin (presumably Silver Surfer #1, not FF #48-50) and is packed in with the two-disc version. K-Mart's exclusive is a lenticular motion cover on the sleeve of the two-disc version. Hastings's exclusive is a set of five lenticular motion trading cards in with the two-disc version. Didn't check Best Buy. I ended up getting the Wal-Mart two-disc version...a dollar cheaper than Target's and I don't really need a copy of Silver Surfer. Both of Wal-Mart's releases came with a code to let you buy a download version at walmart.com for $1.97. Whee.

Gah. I could care less about the FF release outside of the fact that it means Netflix will mail it to me soonish, but they;ve gone nuts with these DVD exclusives. Transformers looks to be doing the same thing, and while I finally nabbed an HD-DVD add on for my Xbox, I don't know what's up with some of the releases. Best Buy was supposed to have some metallic version of Voyager Megs and Ratchet? They've got a set with two "new" robot heroes? Will those be available in HD? Oy.

And since I trust your opinion, what's the deal with Metalocalypse? I see it every week since I tend to watch the shows around it, but I've never gotten why it's any good.

Metalocalypse is just one of those things you like or don't. It certainly doesn't have much in the way of objectively quantifiable quality. It took a while for me to warm to it, but now I love it. Like most Williams Street stuff, it's pretty dumb, and there's no guarantee liking one of their shows will translate into liking others of theirs.

Metalocalypse is not a show I've watched, but I don't dislike it really either. It's at least done by Brandon Small, whom I really like.

Unlike anything involving these turds (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_and_Eric_Awesome_Show%2C_Great_Job%21"). I can guarantee I will hate anything they are involved in.

I've often mentioned that if I had a time machine I would not go back and kill Hitler. I would go back and kill those morons though.

Yeah, I've noticed that trend. I LOVE Venture Brothers, but some of the newer stuff falls flat. I may have to at least give Metalocalypse a chance, since I usually have it on in the background while I check email and such. I did see a bit this past Sunday where three of the guy were taunting the blonde guy about the other guy (don't know any names aside from Murderface) who was taking guitar lessons, witht he "I just walked past his room and, wow, I can not believe that the things he was playing." and some such that was amusing.

Yeah, it took me a while to get all the names, especially the two Scandinavians.

Lead singer: Nathan Explosion (black hair...not a stage name, we meet his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Explosion, in one ep)
Lead guitar: Skwisgar Skwigelf (the blond one who the others were being dicks to)
Rhythm guitar: Toki Wartooth (brown hair, mustache)
Bass guitar: William Murderface (the gap-toothed dick, again that's his family name)
Drummers: Pickles (balding redhead with the strong Wisconsin accent, and I forget his full name)

They're all introduced in the opening theme, but the lyrics are about as comprehensible as any, meaning you can pick out about five words out of thirty. :) In the very first ep, Mark Hamill's character recites the lyrics, however.

Actually, IIRC Pickles has never been given a name beyond "Pickles the Drummer"--even in the Snakes 'n' Barrels "Behind the Music" and the news reports. They never gave his family name in the episode with all the parents, either.

Personally, I find the show somewhat hit-or-miss; some of the absurd humor is good, but it's just a little too over-the-top sick sometimes (the queen's mercury poisoning freaked me the hell out--I think it's the combination of the music with the imagery). Brendon Small's a hell of a metal guitarist, though.

Eh, I'll probably get it at either Best Buy or Target, as I have a strong aversion to going into a Wal-Mart during the day.

All of these pack ins and exclusives these days drive me nuts. Who in thier right mind will actually buy all of the copies. Oh wait, I'm sure SOMEONE does. Hooray for marketing, you're selling 4 extra copies of a movie to some sucker at the expense of angering and possibly alienating everyone else.
