Not yet an uncle

Friday was going to be the day I'd be allowed to break the news to my friends and acquaintances.

Friday was when my kid sister was going to go to the doctor to have it confirmed that she was pregnant for the first time.

She told the immediate families (hers and her husband's) a few weeks ago that the pregnancy test came up positive, but made us promise not to say anything until the doctor's visit where the fetus's heart would theoretically be audible. I was a bit surprised at the time, since I hadn't been paying really close attention and hadn't realized she and my brother-in-law had decided to start trying (at the time of the wedding in late 1999, they wanted to get their careers stable first, I guess stability was achieved this year).

While it looks like I'll probably never be a father, I did look forward to telling my friends I'd soon be an uncle. Looked years down the road to the possibilities of spoiling the young'un on birthdays and Christmases.

Today she miscarried.

Friday's now just going to be a day like any other.

My sincerest condolences your sister and family. I had a friend give birth three months early a couple of years ago due to a weak cervix, and the baby didn't make it. Even this early on I'm sure it's no picnic. I wish there were something more tangible or measurable to contribute to what I'm sure is a difficult time.

Update: she's back from the hospital, and while clearly not HAPPY about things, she's bouncing back pretty well.

Sad, but with an early miscarriage, very much for the best. Those happen when things are Just Going Together Wrong.
