Time for another diabetes entry, whee!
I started taking insulin Wednesday night as a temporary measure to try to get my blood sugar down while waiting for the metformin and actos to kick in. With 25 units, my fasting blood sugar has dropped to 165 two days in a row (ideally it should be below 120). No problems with overshooting, though, so now I've been told to up the dose to 30 units. Also, I've been testing ketone the last two days (it's a sign that you're using too much fat directly for energy, and too much can poison you...it's an inefficient means of using stored fat for energy), and got zero both times, so that's good.
Meanwhile, I'm generally feeling better. The stomach problems have almost completely gone away (I'm still a bit belchy, but no pain), and while my endurance is still low, it's better than it had been. I just now did a brisk four laps of the building, about a kilometer (230m per lap, with a 4m high flight of stairs up on each lap). I stopped when I started to feel I was pushing it a bit much. My goal is to manage at least 7 laps a day (around a mile, and over 20 minutes of activity), eventually 10.
Tonight I go to Emporia KS for a conference, and probably get to duck out of the banquet to administer insulin. At least I no longer need to take 3 AM blood sugar readings to make sure the insulin isn't overdoing it, to the relief of the guy I'll be sharing the hotel room with, I'm sure. I hope to be back before 7 PM tomorrow...both to cut down on the number of things I'll need to watch on tape, and so I don't have to ask our driver to pull over so I can take my nightly shot.
