OK, I don't mind admitting my ignorance- that's the only way to get it cured.

Abelian grope? Is this some sort of "brother's keeper" thing? What's the application?

An Abelian group is a mathematical set in which commutation (where AB=BA instead of, say, AB=-BA) occurs. And "grope" fit the pun better than "reacharound".

There's an old math joke, "What's purple and commutes?" "An Abelian grape!"
